911, 988, 211: U.S. Emergency Numbers Explained — Who to Call and When

Three three-digit numbers every woman in America should know — and what each one actually does.

The short version

  • 911 — immediate danger to life or safety. Police, ambulance, fire.
  • 988 — mental health crisis, suicidal thoughts, emotional distress. Call or text.
  • 211 — everything else: food, housing, bills, local services.

Save all three in your phone right now. In a crisis you will not have time to search.

911 — when there is immediate danger

Call 911 if someone is in danger right now: violence is happening, someone needs urgent medical help, there is a fire or a crime in progress.

You can say “Russian, please” — the operator will connect an interpreter. It may take a moment, stay on the line. If you cannot speak, call and leave the line open: dispatchers are trained to respond to silent calls, and in many areas you can also text 911.

If you are calling about domestic violence, you can ask the responding officers how to request a protective order and whether a victim advocate is available.

988 — when the crisis is inside

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is free, confidential and available 24/7. Call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org. Spanish-language services are built in; interpretation for other languages is available.

You do not have to be suicidal to call. Crushing anxiety, panic that won’t stop, feeling that you can’t cope — that is exactly what this line is for.

211 — when you need help with life

United Way’s 211 line connects you to local services: food pantries, emergency shelter, rent and utility assistance, healthcare programs, legal aid referrals. Free, confidential, available 24/7 in most regions, with interpreters.

Think of 211 as the front desk of the entire American social support system — one call replaces hours of searching.
